The first of this academic year’s Perspectives Lectures will focus on Architecture. Join our panel of speakers on Zoom to hear them discuss the opportunities and challenges of a career in this field. Drawing upon a range of experience, four Bolton School alumni will also reflect upon the diverse range of career choices within the sector and the skills requires to succeed.
Our panellists are Lorna Cruice (Class of 1977), Director at Appletons, Chloe Granger (Class of 1998), Director of Crosby Granger Architects Ltd., Fiona Hazlitt (Class of 2017), currently completing a Masters’ degree in Architecture at Nottingham University, and Emma Roden (Class of 1990) Director, Kimble Roden Architects.
‘Perspectives’ is a series of free, public lectures hosted by Bolton School Girls’ Division, currently taking place on Zoom. They are free to attend and open to pupils in Year 10 and above, parents, alumni, and all other members of the School and local community.
About our panellists:
Chloe Granger (Class of 1998) – Architect Director, AABC SPAB Scholar
Chloe gained her experience working on high-profile conservation and new-build projects for a well-established office in Manchester. She has built up a broad experience in large-scale and complex conservation projects for a multitude of clients including Local Authorities, Universities, PCCs and private individuals. Chloe’s passion is for the understanding and knowledge that historic sites and assets require, how to technically resolve issues faced by clients and to guide better management and sustainability strategies. Chloe is also a Technical Officer with the SPAB, assisting on their Technical Advice helpline, offering technical building advice to architects, surveyors, home-owners, conservation officers and contractors.
Lorna Cruice (Class of 1977) – Director, Appletons (Landscape Architects and Environmental Consultants)
Lorna has spent over 35 years working as a professional chartered landscape architect and arboriculturist. After leaving Bolton School in 1977, she read Landscape Architecture at Leeds Beckett University, followed by a two year post graduate sandwich course at the same university. After a short stint in Local Government, she gained her final professional exam to achieve chartered status and moved into private practice in Bolton, where has remained since.
During her career, Lorna has had responsibility for the design and implementation of a broad range of urban and rural developments for both public and private sector clients, including work on urban regeneration and on projects including new village settlements, leisure, residential, commercial, industrial and mental healthcare related developments. She has considerable experience in Environmental Impact Assessment and Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments, acts as an expert witness in Planning Inquiries and advises a wide range of clients in matters of environmental legislation and planning. She is particularly interested in projects involving sensitive ecological habitats and protected species and with mitigation and conservation management requirements, and has expanded the practice to encompass ecology services. She has also trained as an arboriculturalist, and enjoys nothing better than being out in the field carrying out assessments and assisting with bat surveys!
Fiona Hazlitt (Class of 2017) – Completing a Masters degree in Architecture at Nottingham
Fiona first decided to pursue a career in Architecture after completing work experience at AECOM in Manchester, during her GCSE years. This career choice was solidified when she undertook further work experience at Cassidy + Ashton during her A Level years. Fiona chose her A Level subjects by looking into architecture courses at university and talking to people during work experience that worked in the industry.
In 2017 Fiona started an Architecture degree at the University of Nottingham. Whilst at University she travelled to South Africa to work on a project designing and building a primary school for a small village. She graduated from university in July 2020 with a 2:1 BArch (Hons) degree and returned to Cassidy + Ashton to carry out a Part 1 placement. Fiona spent a year with the company as an Architectural Assistant and worked on a number of projects in different sectors, including, modular primary school extensions, a large elite sports centre and projects in the residential and industrial sectors.
She is now back at the University of Nottingham completing a Masters in Architecture and is due to graduate July 2023. She looks to gain more experience in the industry after her Masters, which will enable her to work towards taking her Part 3 exams and become a qualified Architect.
Emma Roden (nee Platt) (Class of 1990) Director Kimble Roden Architects Ltd, BA Hons; B Arch; Arb, RIBA
Emma is a 25-year qualified architect who has worked in a range of small and medium sized practices before setting up her own practice 10 years ago. She left Bolton School in 1990 when she attended Liverpool University to study for her BA Hons in Architecture, before taking a year out in a medium sized practice in Manchester. She returned to Liverpool for her B Arch degree. She has worked in London and Manchester on a range of projects including schools, healthcare, student accommodation and large-scale city centre apartments. Since setting up her own business, her work has concentrated on private dwelling refurbishments and extensions in the Cheshire area.
